1) My wife, family, friends, cats and co-workers.
Otherwise 2-10 hold little meaning.
2) Being a part of KGSR
- especially the station's charitable community efforts
("broadcasts vol. 12" CD & SIMS Foundation, Fanfare Friday, Christmas Bureau Star-A-Thon and more) - and THE LISTENERS, especially those who take the time to call, email or come up in person to say that KGSR has made a positive impact on their lives in some way.
3) Interviews -
Producing promotional interview discs, released through the artist's label,
with Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Yoko Ono Lennon and others this year, interviewing Shawn Colvin for her new DVD, talking to Brian Wilson on the phone (twice) - and interviewing the Reverend Al Green in his hotel room!
4) Patty Griffin
- Impossible Dream CD, 1st band show in KGSR Music Lounge, ACL TV taping, KGSR's 14th Anniversary Concert.
5) Running
(Pease Park, Central Park, Santa Monica Pier…)
6) Alejandro Escovedo
- his improved health, our friendship, the "Por Vida" tribute CD, his SXSW party & guest appearance on the Sunday Night News, the Por Vida Gala and Fund.
7) Patti Smith
("Trampin' " CD, KGSR Music Lounge Performance, La Zona Rosa).
8) Great Concerts
(Brian Wilson @ The Backyard, The Bridge School in San Francisco, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Blues On The Green and Unplugged At The Grove series, anything at the Cactus Café).
9) Box Sets
(esp The Faces "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" and any Miles Davis box) as well as CDs reissued in Deluxe Editions - especially those with 5.1 mixes!
10) Any book I read or movie I watched that I lost myself in. |

1) Lance Armstrong: for doing what no cyclist has ever done before and doing more for cancer survivorship than anyone ever has. I proudly wear my yellow wristband every day. Props to Lance and the amazing group of people at CSE.
2) The Rise of Los Lonely Boys: from all the Austin Music Awards to the biggest crowd ever at SXSW, to platinum album, to hangin' strong with Carlos Santana and Paul McCartney, to an even bigger crowd at ACL Fest, to the Grammy nominations. I cannot tell you how proud I am of "these few, these band of brothers." Viva Los Lonely Boys!
3) Being able to listen in as my friend Maggie Walter's music developed from a few brilliant demos to a whole brilliant album. CD release: January 25th at the Cactus Cafe. Free show. Please, join me there.
4) Jonatha Brooke's 2004 album "Back in the Circus". My favorite album in a very long time.
5) Best moment of the year: Standing behind the curtain at the Austin Music Hall with Bonnie Raitt (one of my all-time favorite artists who is also just the coolest person) at the Dennis Kucinich rally as she prepared to sing "Takin' It to the Streets" with Mike McDonald and Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers. She admitted to a huge crush on McDonald's voice when they were recording "Runaway" in '77. "Have you ever been in love with somebody's voice?" she asked. See #4
6) Friday morning of SXSW at the Four Seasons with Willie Nelson, Los Lonely Boys, Toots Hibbert, Kris Kristofferson with Stephen Bruton, Steve Poltz, Johnny A. and Ann McCue.
7) Willie Nelson all year long. And all the great people in his family.
8) TIE: My son Chris's 12th birthday party at UT (thanks, Major.)
Chris and me with Field Passes for the Rice game (thanks, Jeff.)
10) Getting Afton Castello to be our Producer. In 2005, she's takin' over the show. Watch out, it'll be great!
Looking back, how lucky can one guy get?
Thanks and love to you all,
KC |
