Apple is celebrating musicians who’ve made an impact on global culture this year with its first ever Apple Music Awards.
Five categories were created to commemorate some of the best musicians of 2019. According to Apple, winners were selected “through a process that reflects the service’s editorial perspective, combined with what customers around the world are loving most.”
Apple Music’s global editorial team chose the award winners for Global Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year. As for the other two categories – Album of the Year and Song of the Year – Apple declared the winners by looking at Apple Music’s customers song history, specifically songs that were listened to on repeat in 2019 and streaming data. Winners have been chosen for all categories and will be awarded on Wednesday, December 4th at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park.

Billie Eilish wins Global Artist of the Year. Eilish’s debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? will take home Apple Music’s Album of the Year, being that it has more than one billion streams on Apple Music. Eilish will be sharing the award with her Finneas O’Connell, who co-wrote and produced the album. The unstoppable duo will also be awarded with Songwriter of the Year.
Breakthrough Artist of the Year will go to Lizzo and Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” has won Song of the Year.
Who needs a trophy when you’ve got Apple, right? All winners will be rewarded with Apple’s custom 12-inch disc silicon wafer suspended between a polished sheet of glass and a machined and anodized aluminum body.
