After a five year hiatus, The Black Keys have returned!
With their new, straight to the point album Let’s Rock, the band has finally stepped back into the limelight. The duo seemingly returned to their heavy, distorted roots. This couldn’t be more apparent than in the album’s opening track, “Shine a Little Light,” that starts with a blast of a classic Black Keys riff.
Tracks such as “Eagles Birds” and “Lo/Hi” throwback to Black Keys sounds of old, still maintaining the rock first, semi pop sounding songs that have made the band’s music staples they are today. The album is a definite refreshing jolt since their previous album, Turn Blue, and subsequent stop of touring in 2014.

After spending 15 years of playing music live, it’s easy to see why the band spent half of the decade taking a much needed break from touring. Lead man Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney spoke to CBS on the taxing nature of touring for more than a third of their lives. “… it was the first time in my adult life, like, after the age of 21 where I was consistent, like, for months able to, like, wake up in the same bed… a novelty that has not worn off,” stated Aurbach.
The duo also spoke of the lack of creativity available while on the road, detailing the monotonous nature of touring. “When you’re on the road, you don’t get to create music. You’re just performing. So, it can become ‘Groundhog Day’ really quickly. Yeah, I mean, we started as a recording project. You know, neither of us have this crazy desire to be in front of people all of the time.”
Overall, the album is a solid welcome back to the band that carried rock through the 2000s.
