Our mornings began at W Austin, of course, during this incredible week of music. What a week it was, full of fun, friends, and road trips? Yes, short day trips to places like Dripping Springs and Spicewood for fabulous musical lineups. I was lucky enough to get into the Luck Reunion again this year (Mavis Staples’ performance was my favorite of the week,) as well as private party Saturday outside of Dripping Springs, but one new adventure took me the Inaugural Revival Experience at Camp Lucy, and it was lovely. I got in on a media pass to this resort, which often hosts weddings in a beautiful hill country setting. Curated by Matthew Logan Vasquez, the lineup featured Patty Griffin, Shakey Graves, Nathaniel Rateliff, Wild Child, Glorietta, Charley Crockett, Nicole Atkins, and more.
We were shuttled to Camp Lucy from south Austin by bus, and met by a friendly staff. As we found our way around, staff members brought by trays of delicious appetizers (the bacon-wrapped quail was a favorite) and there were tents with complementary drinks of most every variety. The area with live music is small and easy to navigate, and included a chapel where intimate sets from the artists were recorded. There were other delights as well–a truly gifted typewriter poet, a photo booth, and of course, Walker Luken’s Song Confessional, which seems to be everwhere lately. It was really nice to enjoy a hill country getaway, right in the middle of Southby.
Two of my favorite musical moments were Nathaniel Rateliff’s riveting solo performance, and Patty Griffin’s set which was made more magical with the hill country sunset as a backdrop.
