Singer-songwriter Citizen Cope performed at ACL Live Sunday night, and on Monday afternoon, the artist joined us on his day off in the Dell Music Lounge.
Memphis born and D.C. raised, Citizen Cope actually lived in Austin before he was performing in front of an audience and touring the world. The artist was inspired to launch his music career, and it all began here.
“I spent a lot of time listening to records and developing kind of my craft here early on in the ’90’s,” said the artist.
The soulful singer is currently on tour, promoting his latest album Heroin and Helicopters.
He says his album is not intended to really be a protest record. “I consider it more like dealing with my own personal demons, personal struggles, personal achievements, and highlights.”
However, Cope’s form of writing is inspired by more than self-reflection. To him, it’s about being aware of the people around you, and what they’re feeling during difficult times. “Any great song-writer can kind of feel the pulse with what’s going on with other people in the world,” said Cope.
You can listen to Heroin and Helicopters here.
