Legendary guitarist and founder of Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, has died at age 65 after his long battle with throat cancer.
The musician died at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica earlier today with his wife, son and brother/drummer Alex Van Halen by his side. Van Halen battled cancer for over 10 years. Sources say the icon’s health became a massive concern within the past three days after doctors located the throat cancer spread to his brain and other organs.
His son, Wolfgang Van Halen, shared a touching tribute to his late father on social media. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from his loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

Van Halen created the rock group back in 1972 with his brother Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and lead singer David Lee Roth. The prominent guitarist was also the main songwriter of the band’s 1978 debut album. Back in 2007, Van Halen was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
