English artist, Rex Orange County, whistled and sang to Austin City Limits Radio’s live audience during the Dell Music Lounge on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old brit, born Alex O’Connor, stopped by right before his sold out show at Stubb’s and performed a few of his most popular tunes. Besides serenading the guests, O’Connor spoke with Andy Langer about life in Grayshott, musical influence, castles, and rising fame.
Unlike Austin, the artist’s hometown Grayshott doesn’t have traffic, but it does have a few castles sprinkled around. Even in its antiquated state, O’Connor said his town has no reason to change.
Rex Orange County also said, “I’m going to come clean man, I didn’t actually live in a castle.”
The rising star eventually left Grayshott to study percussion and drums in London.
“Wanting to know about drums and rhythm in general has informed most of the music,” O’Connor said. “I just put all my energy into one thing, and then I can use what I learned from that and be like playing the piano rhythmically or singing a certain rhythm I would not have thought of if I hadn’t played the drums.”
