Rising Artist Profile: King Princess

King Princess

This Wednesday, we’re crushing hard on breakout indie pop artist King Princess. Last week the 19-year-old from Brooklyn released her debut EP, “Make My Bed,” a sultry, synthesized, perfectly poppy project reminiscent of Lorde’s 2013 breakout pop album, “Pure Heroine.” Also known as Mikaela Straus, King Princess grew up in her father’s recording studio, and learned how to play several instruments like the bass, guitar, piano and drums. She drew her earliest inspirations from bands like Led Zeppelin and T. Rex, as well as Jack White. Back in February, her first major break came when Harry Styles tweeted lyrics from her single “1950,” which is a tribute to the LGBTQ community and its past. “Historically a publicly unaccepted but incredibly rich culture, queer love was only able to exist privately for a long time, expressed in society through coded art forms,” the artist shared to i-D magazine in April. Now signed with Mark Ronson’s label Zelig Records, the super cool teen is well on her way to becoming a staple in the indie scene. Check out “1950” below, and tune into 93.3 KGSR week nights and weekends all summer long to hear fresh music like this during our ongoing Summer of New Music series!
