This weekend, the Dell Music Lounge came alive for a rare Saturday performance with The Wombats, presented by Oskar Blues Brewery, just before they opened for Pixies and Weezer at Austin360 Amphitheater. The punk rock group from Liverpool recently released their fourth studio album “Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life,” and played us some of their biggest hits from the record, like “Lemon to a Knife Fight” and the nostalgic femme fatale ballad “Turn” before closing with their classic single “Let’s Dance to Joy Division.”
In their interview with KGSR’s Andy Langer, the band expressed their excitement about performing here in Austin. “That’s what’s exciting about being over here – it does feel like it’s kind of playing to people again like when we first came to America all those years ago,” explained drummer Dan Haggis. When asked how they wrap their minds around their 60M+ streams on Spotify, front man Matthew Murphy admitted he’d been a little late to the game but was pleasantly surprised with the numbers, while Haggis pointed out that streaming is a “different world, it’s kind of like if people like it enough they’re gonna keep coming back to it again and again, whereas with a CD you get one sale and then you don’t know how many times people are listening to it… Each week we’ll have a little look and say ‘okay, people are still listening,’ it’s like quick feedback.” Despite such incredible success in their careers, the humble band clearly hasn’t forgotten their roots and are still in it for the music. You can catch them back in Austin this October for ACL Fest.
